Though anyone can learn to paint on their own, the best and fastest way to learn and avoid frustration is to find someone who can teach you the tricks and techniques. You'll speed your learning process and make bigger strides fast. Most instructors offer workshops, which are a one week course with other students. Some offer private lessons and group lessons you can take daily or weekly.

Use our directory to find an artist in your area. If you don't find one, search 'artist', 'plein air', and your town or area and contact them to see if they teach, or know someone who does. You may also find a plein air club in your area offering classes, and its members may invite you to paint with them.

Kyle Richardson

A native of Western Massachusetts and an avid painter, I also teach and lecture on materials and techniques, focusing in sustainable painting techniques and color harmony/color theory. I’m the business manager for Royal Talens in North America, which is a wonderful vocation to accompany my avocation. Also, I know the best places for food and drink after the painting session, which is of course critical.

Tom Dimock Studio

I painted my first plein air picture when I was a sophomore in high school. My painting buddy was a class mate of mine who shared the same interest, drive and persistence. We taught ourselves to paint with the help of Robert Henri\’s book The Art Spirit. After art school, I continued to paint outside with buddies and in plein air competitions. Winning numerous awards or selling my work is great, but the best thing of all is just getting out to en plein air. That\’s far better than anything else.
