Though anyone can learn to paint on their own, the best and fastest way to learn and avoid frustration is to find someone who can teach you the tricks and techniques. You'll speed your learning process and make bigger strides fast. Most instructors offer workshops, which are a one week course with other students. Some offer private lessons and group lessons you can take daily or weekly.

Use our directory to find an artist in your area. If you don't find one, search 'artist', 'plein air', and your town or area and contact them to see if they teach, or know someone who does. You may also find a plein air club in your area offering classes, and its members may invite you to paint with them.

Michele Byrne

Every year I teach several workshops.
Please sign up for my email newsletter at www.michelebyrne.com and you will receive newsletters and notices about upcoming workshops and exhibits.

The theme for my paintings is THE ART OF CONVERSATION.
With that in mind most of my paintings involve including the human figure.

Most artists do not add figures to their work, as it is not an easy thing to do. My workshops teach you how to add the figure in a natural, fluid way and how to simplify the subject by breaking it down into basic shapes. I will also talk about how light falls onto a subject and its effect on color and value in the landscape, and how to add drama with your brushstrokes.

I also teach workshops on the basics of plein air painting.

I was a combat artist in Vietnam in 1968. But now my passion is landscape painting- typically outdoors on location. I paint what I see where I am at the time- in the impressionist style. My subjects may be highly recognizable landmarks in South Dakota like the Corn Palace or Falls Park, or they may be the less conspicuous, but no less special, places people recognize in their travels along the Missouri River or through Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills. In that light, I believe that my paintings have relevance and significance, reinforcing a sense of place for the people of South Dakota.
